The formulas
| Conversion | Formula | Example |
|---|---|---|
| sq ft → sq m | sq ft × 0.09290304 | 200 sq ft = 18.58 m² |
| sq m → sq ft | sq m × 10.7639 | 50 m² = 538.2 sq ft |
| sq ft → sq yd | sq ft ÷ 9 | 200 sq ft = 22.22 sq yd |
| sq ft → acres | sq ft ÷ 43,560 | 200 sq ft = 0.0046 acres |
A common shortcut is "divide square feet by 10" to get square meters. That overstates the metric area by about 7.6% — fine for a rough chat, wrong for ordering tile. Use 0.0929 (or this page) when money is involved.

Conversion questions
How many square feet is a 50 m² apartment?
50 × 10.7639 = 538.2 sq ft. Listings in metric countries quote the gross area including walls; US listings quote living area, so the same home can look bigger in m² and smaller in sq ft than you expect.
Is 1 sq m exactly 10.7639 sq ft?
1 ÷ 0.09290304 = 10.7639104… sq ft. The 10.7639 figure is that rounded to four decimal places — accurate to well under a thousandth of a percent, far beyond tape-measure precision.
Why do real-estate conversions never match my room measurements?
Because the areas being converted are defined differently (gross vs. net, walls included or not), not because the factor is off. Convert a like-for-like area and the factor above is exact.
